The Importance of Being Modified: RNA modifications in science and biomedical applications" Modified RNAs are targets of intervention, tools in cell and molecular biology and therapeutics in control of gene expression. The 112 verifiable, RNA modified nucleosides are ubiquitous and conserved, yet they provide novel chemistry, structure and dynamics important to RNA function. These post-transcriptional modifications can be simple alkylations or extensive additions to RNA. They occur at strategic sites important to functional interactions in RNA`s control of gene expression and thus, could be used in rational drug design. An understanding of modified nucleosides can be used in the design of RNAs having new structures and functions.
