There has been a long history of research and theory on the relationship between cognitive function and mental health. The aim being to better understand and treat mental health problems. This lecture will cover some aspects of this by considering anxiety and depression and working memory function. In particular the evidence for an interactive relationship between the two and how this fits with the theory and practice of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The remainder of the lecture will cover how these ideas have influenced the structure, delivery and policy of mental health provision in the UK and discuss the implications of these approaches, for example the growth of self-help in treatment and the impact on the psychology profession .
