Prof. Chen graduated in 1988 from Peking University, where she studied Plant Physiology. Sponsored by the CUSBEA program, she continued her graduate study at Cornell University and obtained her Ph.D. in 1995. After a postdoctoral training at California Institute of Technology, she became an assistant professor at Rutgers University in 1999. She relocated to University of California, Riverside in 2005 and is now a Distinguished Professor of Plant Cell and Molecular Biology.
The Chen lab is focusing in two major directions. One is the biogenesis, degradation, modes of action, and biological functions of noncoding RNAs in plants. The other is the temporal regulation of floral stem cells. She has made many seminal discoveries in plant biology; in 2002 her lab was one of the three labs that discovered the presence of MicroRNA existed in plants. She was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011, and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2013. She has been an investigator of Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 2011.
