Abstract:
Calcium and ABA function as central signals in responses to stresses like drought, cold and  salinity. Nevertheless, the interrelations between the formation and function of both messengers remained largely enigmatic. Here, I show that the occurrence of calcium signals is pivotal to establish plant stress responses. Accordingly, these calcium signatures are essential and sufficient for inducing ABA accumulation. Calcineurin B-like proteins (CBLs) upon interaction with specific CIPK protein kinases phosphorylate and activate ABA responsive transcription factors. Reconstituting complete calcium and ABA signaling pathways in human cell lines and plant protoplasts, established calcium signaling via specific CBL/CIPK complexes as required and sufficient for ABF2 activation. Together with the phosphorylation analyses of other transcription factors, these results indicate that calcium triggered, CBL/CIPK mediated phosphorylation of transcription factors represents a widespread mechanism to ensure specificity and effectiveness of stress adaptation. I will discuss how this mechanism allows for integration, fine tuning and termination of hormonal and calcium signaling on the level of gene transcription.
