Working at the interface of RNA splicing and breast cancer biology, our research focus is on regulation of breast cancer metastasis driven by alternative splicing. We use molecular biology and bioinformatics approaches in conjunction with genetic models and patient samples to discover rules and networks that regulate breast cancer metastasis and associated processes. Our work provided a conceptual framework implicating that RNA alternative splicing serves as a causal mechanism driving Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition and breast cancer progression. We also discovered a novel splicing-mediated pathway that promotes cancer metastasis. We demonstrated that the RNA binding protein hnRNPM reprograms alternative splicing and drives a breast cancer metastatic phenotype. We are now testing the hypothesis that the plasticity of alternative splicing determines cancer stem cell phenotypes.
